Annapolis EV Showcase
Sunday, September 26
City Dock
10am – 2pm
Annapolis Green just completed a half-year of EV information that started with Drive Electric Earth Day and ended with our Kick Gas! In Annapolis celebration of National Drive Electric Week with a big EV Showcase on September 26. We even included an online trivia night with a professional comedian and were thrilled to include a yacht brokerage that represents electric boats to our family of sponsors.
As one of our sponsors, Electrify America, says, driving electric is normal now. We hope you will join us in switching out your ride from fossil-fueled to electric. It’s something almost everyone can do as EVs become more and more affordable and the number of charging locations continues to grow.
Why is an environmental organization like Annapolis Green advocating for driving electric? We do so because driving electric eliminates pollution on the road — right where you are breathing. About 80% of the carbon load on our atmosphere comes from transportation. Driving electric is one thing almost everyone can do to combat the effects of the Climate Crisis that is threatening our planet, our wellbeing, and life as we know it today.
Scroll down for general EV information but first let us review the past few months of events.
Photos by Kenneth Tom, Jeff Voigt Aerial Photography, JD Taylor, and other EV participants.
Several hundred people joined us at Susan Campbell Park, right by the harbor, for a showcase of more than 60 new and pre-owned EVs, electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, and an electric yacht. The event kicked off in a festive way with Annapolis’ own fabulous Naptown Brass Band leading a Second Line parade from the top of Ego Alley to our event. That New Orleans music “Charged Up” the crowd! Next, officials from all four levels of government spoke about the importance of driving electric for Climate Change reasons.
Speakers were Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, Maryland Secretary of the Environment Ben Grumbles, and US Senator Chris Van Hollen.
Other dignitaries present included Maryland Public Service Commission Chairman Jason Stanek, Maryland Deputy Secretary of Transportation R. Earl Lewis, Jr., Maryland State Senator Sarah Elfreth, Maryland Delegate David Fraser-Hidalgo, Maryland Delegate Dana Jones, Annapolis Alderman Ross Arnett, and Anne Arundel County Councilwoman Lisa Rodvien.
After the remarks the dignitaries, led by Senator Van Hollen, cut a ribbon to officially open the show.
Members of the public were enthusiastic and asked more targeted questions than they have in the past. It seems people are coming around to the idea of driving electric. As one of our sponsors, Electrify America, says: It’s Normal Now.
Drivers brought and presented their own vehicles at the show and even showed off props like different types of charging nozzles and adapters. They gave the public information about taking long road trips with their EVs and shared “Fun Facts!” about driving electric.
Professor Bob Bruninga showed how he’s connected his Chevrolet Volt Plug-in Hybrid to his home during power outages allowing him to keep the lights on and more. One driver brought a beautiful Polestar 2, a car few of us had seen in person before. Other driver vehicles included the Jaguar i-Pace, Chevrolet Bolt, Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai KONA Electric, Nissan LEAF, Think City, Toyota Prius Prime, and Toyota RAV4 Prime Plug-in Hybrid.
Tesla drivers brought all five models, from the original Roadster to the Model S sedan, Model 3 sedan, Model X SUV (with the impressive gull doors, brought by JD Taylor, president of the Maryland Tesla Owners group), and the Model Y smaller SUV.
Electric motorcycle drivers are just as enthusiastic about their quiet rides. We had both the Harley-Davidson LiveWire and the Zero brands.
Sponsor BGE brought its Ford Mach-e and Chevrolet company cars, a charger demo model and a bucket truck! While the truck itself is not electric the arm that raises the bucket is, meaning that the truck can be turned off when it arrives on-site and the arm can be manipulated without a fossil-fueled generator too!
Police departments across the country are electrifying their fleets. The Hyattsville Police Department brought its Chevrolet Bolt police car and Zero electric motorcycle. The Montgomery County Police Department brought its Ford Mach-e police car.
While drivers talked with everyone, our dealer sponsors showed off the newest models. Porsche had two all-electric Taycans, stunningly beautiful luxury EVs. Annapolis Cars brought the brand new Volvo XC40 Recharge compact SUV, another model few had ever seen in person. Annapolis Cars also brought the Hyundai Ioniq and the Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid. Fitzgerald Volkswagen Annapolis – and several drivers – brought the ID.4 new EV model. BMW of Annapolis brought the brand new iX Sports Activity Vehicle.
Yacht Sales International docked the 39-foot Greenline hybrid electric yacht in one of the slips next to our show. The Greenline comes in an all-electric model as well. YSI also represents other electric yacht brands including the Alva.
Our seminar series during the show were a hit! Thank you to:
- Ron Kaltenbaugh, President of the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater DC, for his talk on the connection between Driving Electric and Climate Change
- Kristy Fleischmann Groncki, Manager of Strategic Programs, Utility of the Future, BGE, for her talk on how home charging affects your electric bill
- Tom Lewis, resident of The Point Condominium for discussing his experience arranging for installation of charging infrastructure in condos and other multi-family situations
- Melanie Hartwig-Davis, architect and principal of HD Squared Architects (and a show sponsor) for her talk on design for EV infrastructure at home, and her husband, government architect Lance Davis for discussing commercial EV infrastructure design
- Rick Peters, Partner of Solar Energy Services (and a show sponsor) for his talk on “Driving on Sunshine,” that is, powering EVs with solar energy
K&B True Value also sponsored our show. The store has a large selection of electrically powered lawn care tools. Fossil-fueled lawn care products are more polluting than cars. Read more.
Neighborhood Sun presented information about obtaining solar power for your home without solar panels on the roof through community solar. And signing up for this service through Annapolis Green brings a donation to us too! Get more information here.
Other information presented to the public at the show:
- Map of charging station locations nearby
- Test rides on the Harley-Davidson Series 1 e-bicycle
- Information about the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington DC (EVADC), the local drivers’ group
- Information about Spa Creek (where the show was located) from the Spa Creek Conservancy
Thank you to the City of Annapolis and Eye on Annapolis for support for the show. Thank you also to the many volunteers who made this show possible and to photographer Kenneth Tom for the photographs. Thank you also to aerial photographer Jeff Voigt for spectacular drone shots of the event, videographer Patrick Loughrey for video, and other EV show participants for other photos.

Annapolis Green invites everyone who is interested in, or curious about, driving electric to attend its free “Kick Gas! Annapolis EV Earth Day” event on Saturday, April 17. It’s part of the national Drive Electric Earth Day campaign designed to share information about electric vehicles throughout the month of April all around the United States.
As federal and state policies make big moves toward embracing the Climate Change benefits of driving electric, Annapolis Green will step up the public education program it has championed for the past seven years with a six-month 2021 information initiative culminating in a major EV Showcase during National Drive Electric Week in the fall.
As the only local nonprofit consistently advocating for driving electric, the April 17 event is our 2021 Earth Day focus – helping our community better understand and adopt this technology that keeps our atmosphere cleaner and mitigates the effects of Climate Change. We want EV questions because we have answers!

Some owners will offer rides so the public can experience what driving with zero emissions is all about. The event is part of the national Drive Electric Earth Day initiative. The library has Level 2 and Level 3 chargers so the public will be able to see first-hand how charging works.
Annapolis Library will provide free masks for anyone who needs one, copies of Library Happenings and materials on Earth Day & EVs for check out, and related kids’ interactive activities including “Make a Backyard Bird Feeder” (complete with bird seed, and biodegradable string and instructions) and pre-made STEM kits.
To accompany the in-person show we will present a unique virtual 3-D video tour of a Tesla Model Y electric vehicle that will emphasize benefits of zero-emissions driving on our natural environment. Made with Matterport, a 3-D data platform that creates realistic, fully immersive experiences, the video will be the anchor of our event and a lasting information piece on our website and social media. The video is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.
And, because we’re Annapolis, Annapolis Green is adding the “EB” (Electric Boating) to EV (Electric Vehicles) at our upcoming Kick Gas! Annapolis EV Showcase!
It seems only fitting that our upcoming show is taking place during the Bay Bridge Boat Show across the Bay in Stevensville (April 15-18). We are excited to welcome Greenline Yachts (presented by Yacht Sales International). Although a boat won’t be docked at the Library, the crew will be with us to show a cool 3-D video, answer questions and invite you to visit personally over at the Boat Show (or at the Yacht Sales International office in Eastport).
Yet, it gets even better! Yacht Sales International is making a very special raffle offering at our show – for two lucky winners – to enjoy a Sunset Cruise from the Bay Bridge Marina to Yacht Haven Marina in Eastport on Sunday, April 18. The winners will personally experience Electric Boating, relaxing with a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres.
The Greenline 39 Hybrid sets the standard for comfortable, economical and quiet family cruising. This Greenline hybrid epitomizes forward-looking design and engineering throughout. The one-level floorplan that creates a seamless transition from cockpit to salon, to a well-appointed helm that includes a side door for easy entrance/egress to the bow. With the two staterooms and full head, it is perfect for a weekend getaway OR completing the Great Loop.

Why Drive Electric?
Electric Vehicles that run on batteries (without a back-up gasoline engine, as some have) produce no noxious emissions. There is no choking pollution coming out of a tailpipe. In fact, there is no tailpipe. An electric car gives you a nearly silent drive that does not harm the lungs of the people behind you — or you, for that matter.
Added benefits: EVs are fun to drive (you meet a lot of nice, curious people), are less expensive to operate and fuel than gasoline-powered vehicles, promote local jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
What about the electricity?
Yes, there is the issue of where the electricity to power electric vehicles comes from. Today, most of our electricity still comes from coal-fired plants. But that is changing and changing fast. Utilities are required by the State of Maryland to increase renewable sources for their plants. The current legally mandated requirement is for utilities to be run by 25% renewables by next year, 2020, and that is expected to increase with each passing year. Further, while the power plants do produce greenhouse gases, they are still more energy efficient than an individual gas or diesel-powered vehicle is on the road.
Regarding the effect on your power bill if you charge at home, it will go up only slightly — as if you’d plugged in a small refrigerator. Your power company can provide some comparison figures. If you have solar power, even better! Then you’re driving courtesy of the sun.
What about purchase and maintenance cost?
Today, there are at least 13 all-electric and 13 hybrid (those with a back-up gasoline engine) automobile models with a base price under the $34,500 average cost for a gasoline-powered car. (Click on the image , or here, for a listing of cars and their cost, range, and more) There are quite a few luxury models as well. But here is the important part: Once you buy or lease an all-electric EV, there is almost NO maintenance. There is no oil or transmission fluid to change. You will still have to have your tires rotated, brakes checked and your windshield wipers replaced periodically, but that’s it.
Regarding the brakes, most EVs have regenerative braking capability, that is, hitting the brakes or slowing down results in some power being returned to the battery. You could say the car is making its own power at that point. You can also stop or slow down most EVs via a small pedal on the steering wheel. That means you can stop the car without engaging the brakes.
The advantages of braking without the brakes include lower maintenance costs (the brakes will last longer) and less brake pad pollution in the air.
Are there government incentives?
The federal tax credit, $2500 to $7500, is for new EVs purchased in the United States and varies by the type of car and the capacity of its battery. Here is the info right from the IRS.
The Maryland excise tax credit is now up to $3000 for qualified plug-in vehicles, however, demand surged and the fund has been used up. When the General Assembly provides additional funding, applications will once again be accepted. Read more.
There is also a Maryland rebate program for the installation of certain chargers. Read more.
What about charging time, convenience and cost?
Driving electric is a time-saver. With a gasoline-powered car you have to make time to refuel. You can’t do anything else while that is happening. And you have to do it often. Most EV drivers charge their cars at home while they are relaxing or doing something else. Or they might charge at a shopping center or restaurant or at work — again, while doing something else. And there is no gasoline smell on your hands after you use a charging cord.
And finally, electricity costs less than gasoline. It’s that simple. The US Department of Energy has a calculator that will show you how an “e-gallon” costs half what gasoline costs. Just for comparison, if it costs $2.72 to fuel a gasoline car, the equivalent cost of fueling a battery-powered electric vehicle is $1.22.
There are three charging levels.
Level 1 is a simple wall plug. It’s slow but it works just fine.
Level 2 is faster and is what you most often see in shopping centers, for example. Level 3 is the fastest charging. Those chargers are often found on major highways.
Much of the charging away from home is free although for many you must establish an account with a network like ChargePoint, EV-Go, or SemaConnect for the convenience of swiping your membership card to start the charging process or to pay, if that’s applicable. Still, even if you do pay for charging, overall it will cost less than fueling a gasoline-powered car. See above.
There are many tools available to help you find charging away from home whether nearby or for a longer trip. They include:

Our last Annapolis Electric Vehicle In-person Showcase
Saturday, September 14, 2019
City Dock
11 am – 5 pm
There’s an Electric Car in Your Future!
Many people joined Annapolis Green at Susan Campbell Park, also known as City Dock, at Annapolis’ beautiful Historic Harbor, for our 2019 Electric Vehicle Showcase. With the gorgeous backdrop of sailboats, powerboats, kayaks and paddleboards, they chatted with enthusiastic owners of electric vehicles of all kinds (and dealers too) and learn what it’s like to drive with that EV smile!
The purpose of the Showcase was to inform the public about how driving electric benefits the environment in terms of air and water quality and how zero-emissions help to ameliorate Climate Change. The event was part of National Drive Electric Week 2019 (Sept. 14-22), a nationwide celebration to heighten awareness of today’s widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more. Our event’s premier sponsor was BGE.
What made this event unique is that the vast majority of the participants – that is, those who brought vehicles for display – are individual owners. This enthusiastic advocacy allows us to encourage the public to “hear from owners about what it’s like to drive electric.” A number of dealerships and manufacturers’ representatives participated as well.

BGE’s EVsmart℠ Program – leading the charge for Electric Vehicles
BGE’s EVsmart Program gives customers the tools, incentives and information they need to charge their electric vehicle (EV) faster, smarter and more conveniently than ever before. Through BGE’s EVsmart online toolkit, customers can apply for a charger rebate, learn the basics of EV charging, use savings calculators to compare the cost of gas-powered versus electric-powered vehicles, view state and federal tax incentives available for EV owners and locate an EV dealer in their area.
BGE residential customers who purchase and install select Level 2 smart chargers may be eligible for a $300 rebate. Upgrading to a Level 2 smart charger allows EV owners to charge their vehicle significantly faster than with a standard Level 1 charger and lets them track their energy usage through an optional smartphone app. Multifamily property managers and owners can also receive up to $25,000 in incentives for the installation of Level 2 or DC Fast Chargers at their property.
This fall, BGE will also launch a public charging network throughout central Maryland. Once completed, EV drivers will have the option of charging their vehicle at 500 chargers throughout BGE’s service area. Exhibiting: Learn more about BGE’s EVsmart online or at the Showcase.
