Paddling enthusiasts wanted! Do you love to get out on the water? Here is your chance to share your love with others by assisting to lead canoe and kayak trips on the Patuxent River.
New and returning canoe and kayak volunteers are required to attend Jug Bay canoe training before leading trips. Canoe experience required. Jug Bay procedures, proper paddling strokes, bow and stern paddling, safety protocols, and rescues will be covered. Dress accordingly to enter the water for wet exits and rescue demonstrations. Closed toed shoes required. Bring a lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, and an extra set of dry clothes.
Space is limited. Ages:18 and older. FREE – with 4 trip minimum commitment in 2022. Current health guidelines and registration required. To register, or questions, e-mail rpgage00@aacounty.org.

Join Jug Bay’s volunteer team to survey our ten vernal pools throughout the 2022 season, beginning Feb 1 and ending May 30. Volunteers will receive an introduction to vernal pools, water quality monitoring, and our methods for sampling for animal life. Volunteers are expected to commit to visiting our pools once per month for 4-6 hours throughout the survey season which includes off-trail hiking. Registration and current health guidelines required. First Day Hikes in Maryland State Parks
First Day Hikes include First Weekend Outdoor Opportunities, with Ranger-led Hikes and Self-Guided Hike Options for the Whole Family!
Maryland State Parks will be offering First Weekend hike opportunities across the state from December 31, 2021- January 2, 2022. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities on the first day of the new year! Join in Maryland on January 1 or throughout the first weekend of the new year for a hike at a state park near you.
The closest one to us is a self-guided, mile-long, easy First Day Hike in Sandy Point State Park. Read more.
First Day Hikes in Anne Arundel County
The hikes are intended to promote an alternate way of celebrating the New Year by going outside, getting some exercise, and enjoying local nature and history. Start your year off on the right foot by joining knowledgeable park rangers, naturalists, and volunteers in one of our County’s beautiful parks:
- Bacon Ridge Natural Area, 10am – noon
- Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, 9am – noon
- Downs Park, 10 – 11:30am
- Kinder Farm Park, 10 – 11:30am

Join an avid Jug Bay birder to learn skills for identifying birds by sight and sound. Novice and experienced birders are welcome on this 2-3 mile walk to explore the forests and wetlands in search of the 250+ species of birds that call Jug Bay home, or migrate through.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a spotting scope and binoculars if you have them. Ages 12 and older. Free with $6 per vehicle park entrance fee. Gate opens at 6:45 am for a 7 am prompt start time.

Smithsonian Associates presents a talk about the value wetlands add to our world in a virtual talk by Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Naturalist and Educator Liana Vitali. She will offer an audio-visual immersion into the marshes, ponds, swamps, and peat bogs of North America to discover just how important these ecosystems are to life on Earth. Through high-quality images and films, she will share how wild and wonderful wetlands can be.
Tickets $20 for Smithsonian members; $25 for non-members.

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is partnering with Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay for Project Clean Stream. Every year, tens of thousands of volunteers come together to pick up trash from local streams, creeks, rivers, parks, and neighborhoods as part of the Alliance’s Project Clean Stream!
We will be picking up trash along the Patuxent River at our Patuxent Wetland Park,1426 Mt. Zion Marlboro Road, Lothian. All trash will be entered into the Clean Swell app. Free. Ages 8 and up.
Current health guidelines will be required. COVID mask, social distancing, and registration required.

Join fellow gardeners, butterfly watchers and native plant enthusiasts in the butterfly garden. Volunteers weed, water, prune and otherwise maintain the Butterfly Garden at the Glendening Preserve’s Plummer House at
Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. Volunteers learn all about which plants support our native pollinators and how to take care of a vibrant and healthy garden. Occasionally volunteers are welcome to take plants and cuttings home for their
own gardens. Bring work gloves, a snack, a refillable water bottle, hat and sunscreen and clothes and shoes that can get dirty. Registration is not required and walk-ins are welcome!

Spend a Sunday afternoon at the first of Jug Bay’s 2020 Soup and Science series. From noon to 1 pm, enjoy homemade soup and fresh bread, and catch up with friends and colleagues. Then sit back with dessert and enjoy listening to guest speaker Dr. Zachary Singer.
For ages 16+. Admission fee $5 per person for non Friends of Jug Bay (FOJB) members, paid at lecture. FOJB members are admitted free.
