Invasive Species Control Program

Scenic Rivers Land Trust is excited to announce the second season of its Invasive Species Control Program at Bacon Ridge Natural Area. In May and June Scenic Rivers staff will gather for weekly workdays with small groups of volunteers to remove invasive plant species along the trails of the Natural Area. Invasive plant species, such as Japanese stiltgrass, wavyleaf basketgrass, and oriental bittersweet, can be incredibly damaging to forest ecosystems. Presented by Café Scientifique, speaker Dr. Neil Jacobs will cover a 20-year project to document and protect native orchids species in North America.  It will be a photographic journey with stories about science, conservation, discovery, taxonomy, and community engagement. There are over 27,000 orchid species, yet less than 900 have been studied, and over half of those are considered vulnerable, threatened, or endangered. Catfish Species in Maryland: A Snapshot of the Last 120 Years
