Walking the Talk

We hear a lot about Climate Change as increasingly intense storms, heat waves, and rising seas make headlines. While greater awareness is good, it’s not what we say that matters, but what we do. Since its inception, Annapolis Green has worked tirelessly to educate and inspire people to adopt new ways of living that support both the environment and our community.

PLASTIC. We teamed up with the Annapolis Mayor’s office to create Plastic Free Annapolis, a program offering residents and businesses an opportunity to play a pivotal role in reducing plastic pollution. More than 40 establishments—and many individuals and households—significantly lowered the volume of single-use plastic polluting our land and waterways. Our follow-on public education program, No Butts in the Bay, encourages cigarette butt disposal in bins, not on the ground.

LITTER REDUCTION. Our distinctive NAPTOWN TAPs served up unlimited filtered water free of charge at outdoor events throughout the city, encouraging people to ditch disposable plastic water bottles in favor of reusable ones. Use of the TAPs eliminated an estimated 21,700 single-use plastic bottles in 2022 alone. Our Responsible Events & Festivals (REF) program helps reduce landfill waste by making it easy for attendees at special events to recycle and compost. Since REF’s introduction, we’ve composted an estimated 100 tons of organic material and recycled thousands of pounds of paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass waste.

DRIVE ELECTRIC. Annapolis Green is the only local organization championing the switch from fossil-fueled transportation to electric in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our Kick Gas! in Annapolis program includes community talks and outreach. Last month we held our tenth electric vehicle showcase displaying the latest models and offering informational seminars on Climate Change, charging infrastructure, government incentives and one-on-one connections with drivers who have made the switch.

Annapolis Green has produced some of the biggest EV car shows in the state. Members of Congress have come to it, State officials have come to it. Annapolis Green is very persuasive about touting the benefits of driving electric. I consider Annapolis Green to be an institution—and an important one—in Annapolis. They have so much energy and enthusiasm, and such great ideas.
–Jacqueline Guild, Deputy City Manager for Resilience & Sustainability

Every act of generosity counts. This #GivingTuesday, stand up for Nature, and the future of our community, by donating to Annapolis Green.

Why Give?

Because contributing to local nonprofits like ours is a powerful way to invest in the people and places that shape our everyday lives. Your contribution to Annapolis Green matters. Every dollar impacts the health of our environment through initiatives that educate, inform, and incite the kind of change that makes a difference.

The things Annapolis Green does for the community and the City of Annapolis is just mind boggling… it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes things that people don’t see, but they’re there all the time.

Kick Gas! In Annapolis.

Kicking Gas for Over a Decade! Since its founding, Annapolis Green has led the charge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging people to switch from fossil-fueled transportation to electric. In fact, we’re the only organization in the Annapolis area to do so. Our last EV showcase, Kick Gas! In Annapolis, featured more than 60 electric cars, pickup trucks, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, bikes, scooters—and even an electric school bus! Chock full of informational seminars on Climate Change, charging infrastructure, government incentives, and one-on-one connections with EV drivers, Kick Gas! in Annapolis has educated hundreds of attendees about the outsized role tailpipe emissions play in contributing to climate disasters and the critical need for electric vehicles.

Everyone has something to give.

Every day, people just like you make the world a better place—one dollar at a time. Your donation to Annapolis Green helps protect the waterways, parks, woodlands, and neighborhoods we all cherish.

Annapolis Green is the conscience of the community. They are the ones who constantly remind us to be our best selves.
–Bob Gallagher, Environmental Advocate

The Planet is Drowning in Plastic!

We’re rescuing our corner of it one straw, bag, water bottle, and cigarette butt at a time. Plastic pollution is one of the most important environmental threats we face, choking our waterways and injuring countless seabirds and marine mammals—often fatally. Annapolis Green partners with local officials, residents, businesses, and other nonprofits to tackle the issue head-on.

Teaming up with the Annapolis Mayor’s office, we created Plastic Free Annapolis, a program offering residents and businesses an opportunity to play a pivotal role in reducing plastic pollution. More than 40 establishments—and many individuals and households—significantly lowered the volume of single-use plastic threatening our land and waterways.

Cigarette butts are made of plastic and are not biodegradable. With every rainfall, they wash into storm drains and find their way into creeks, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. Annapolis Green’s public education program, No Butts in the Bay, in partnership with the City of Annapolis, encourages the disposal of cigarette butts in one of our 15 receptacles located throughout the City.

Saying NO to single-use plastic water bottles! Our distinctive NAPTOWN TAPs serve up unlimited filtered water free of charge at many outdoor events City-wide, encouraging people to replace disposable plastic water bottles in favor of reusable ones. The TAPs have eliminated tens of thousands of 16.9-oz. single-use plastic bottles to date!

When people come to our booth at the Annapolis Boat Show we direct them to the NAPTOWN TAP where they can refill their reusable bottles with fresh water instead of having to buy water. I think you’re going to see a lot fewer plastic water bottles in this city, which is a true testament to what Annapolis Green has accomplished.
–Paul Bollinger, Executive Director, C.R.A.B. (Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating)
