Cafe Scientifique: Energy Choices: Solar, Wind, EVs and Emergency Power

June 24, 2021 at 6:15 pm - 8:30 pm

cafe scientifique

Café Scientifique presents a talk by Bob Bruninga, author, retired senior research engineer, US Navy Commander, and US Naval Academy Instructor.

Professor Bruninga will provide a talk on the topic of his two “Energy Choices” books:
Energy Choices for the Radio Amateur (2019), and
Energy Choices: Opportunities to Make Wise Decisions for a Sustainable Future (2018)

His talk will cover the gamut of solar and emergency power for the homeowner and DIY experimenter, including the coming wave of Electric Vehicles (EVs). He will cover the topics of integrating energy sources (solar, the grid and home battery power). Now, with over 60 full-sized electric vehicles on the market, the biggest cost element of off-grid storage (big batteries) has fallen into our laps at virtually no cost. The battery in a typical EV can power a house for a week to 10 days. Meanwhile, solar panels now cost less than 10% of what they did 10 years ago.

About the Speaker: Bob Bruninga, who served 20 years as a  Naval officer followed by 27 years as an instructor at the US Naval Academy, is best known for integrating GPS into Amateur Radio.  His project began on an Apple II computer in 1982, plotting the position of ships. That was followed in 1984 with a version on a Commodore VIC-20 for tracking horses in a 100-mile (160 km) endurance run in northern Virginia. The next version, called the Connectionless Emergency Traffic System (CETS), was best used during a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) exercise. In 1991 it was ported to the IBM Personal Computer, and became APRS in 1993, when it was presented at the Digital Communications conference. APRS evolved into a nationwide digital network used by hams radio operators for special events and digital communications for situational awareness.
