We feasted responsibly!

The Rotary Club of Annapolis worked with Annapolis Green to make the 69th Annual Crab Feast a ZERO-WASTE event. Some 10 TONS of food waste are now being composted at our the facility of our composting partner, Veteran Compost, in Aberdeen. Working with our recycling partner, WasteStrategies, we collected close to 2000 pounds of recyclables. All that -- the food waste and the plastics, paper and cans -- would have gone to the landfill without our program. And, as two added benefits, crab feasters learnd about recycling and composting, and the clean-up at the end was quicker! Volunteer Rotarians, who worked really, really hard, were a delight to partner with -- getting into the spirit of stewardship of our resources.

Some 2,300 people attended and finished off 350 bushels of crabs, 3,400 ears of corn, 100 gallons of crab soup, 1,800 hot dogs, 150 pounds of beef barbeque, and hundreds of gallons of soft drinks and beer. The crowd was very cooperative, in fact, enthusiastic, to compost and recycle! It took the community to make this a success.

We have a video of the event coming soon! Stay tuned.
