Did we ever celebrate! Some 500 curious people came to Maryland Avenue to learn about what it's like to drive electric. They saw over 46 cars of all types and two electric motorcycles and talked to lots of enthusiastic owners.

Annapolis Green, partnered with the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater DC to host the Annapolis Showcase as part of National Drive Electric Week on Maryland Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 10.

Owners and dealers of electric vehicles encouraged people to "Ask me why I drive electric!" with historic Annapolis as a backdrop. Maryland Avenue is bounded by the Maryland State House on one end and the US Naval Academy on the other.

One thing you can say about electric vehicle owners is that they (Elvia included!) are fanatics about their cars and bikes. People loved hearing from the owners about the driving experience, performance, cost, and incentives. Porsche of Annapolis--one of our event sponsors--brought two Cayenne hybrids, and Mercedes of Annapolis brought an all electric b-Class. They were there to discuss what they can offer in terms of sales and leasing. Owners brought three different types of Teslas and Chevy, Nissan, Kia, Cadillac, Fisker, Ford, Honda, GEM, Toyota, BMW, Think City, Brammo, Honda, and Volkswagen were represented.

Most of the vehicles were brought to the event by individual owners, who spoke frankly about their experiences with plug-in transportation. Some were brought by dealers who offered information about lease and purchase.

Maryland Avenue is the city’s oldest shopping area and features unique boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and an Irish Pub. It’s a great juxtaposition of historic buildings and the transportation of the future that is here today!

One of the afternoon's hits was the Hyattsville Police Department's Chevy Bolt patrol car and Zero motorcycle -- both all electric. Annapolis Police officers were very interested as was the mayor, who proclaimed September 10, 2017, as "Drive Electric Day in Annapolis."

Our event was planned in cooperation with the Maryland Avenue & State Circle Association and the Downtown Annapolis Partnership. The event sponsors were SemaConnect and Porsche of Annapolis.

We owe a big thank you to our volunteers: Brigitte McKee, Julie Crudele, Tom Cagle, Annapolis Green Board Member Noel Gasparin, photographer Ken Tom, Maryland Avenue & State Circle Association president John Scherfel, EV owners Matt Gibbens, Scott Wilson and Russell Rankin (one of our Founding One Hundred sponsors), and Jim Martin of the Inner West Street who loaned us--and delivered--the street barricades.

Are you curious about driving electric? You know you are. Ask Elvia. She's been driving gas-free for almost three years and she has that EV Smile!
